What: Foundation Summer 2010

Background:
On Monday March 15, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. at the offices of Coalition for Justice and Respect (CJR) at 1525 East 55th Street Suite 312 and the Foundation for the Coalition for Justice and Respect (FCJR) will hold a Community Meeting to announce Foundation Summer 2010.
Foundation Summer will be a summer jobs program for African-American Same Gender Loving Black LGBTQA youth from the ages of 14-21 years of age. The summer jobs program will provide orientation and on the work experience for young adults that are either LGBT or Allies of the African-American LGBT communities throughout the state of Illinois . The funding for this program is through the President Barrack Obama Administration American Recover and Reinvestment Act and administrated by the Governor Pat Quinn’s Illinois Department of Human Services.
The purpose of the program is to be responsive to increase needs for practical resources and temporary work relief to families and individuals that would qualify for the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Fund.
“CJR is honored to be apart of the effort to bring these resources to the African-American communities around the State of Illinois. With the support of the Illinois Department of Public Health we will also utilize this opportunity to provide information to the cities and communities we will be in to continue our goal to reduce the prevalence of HIV within the African- American communities by 3% by the year 2012.” Says Marc Loveless Executive Director Coalition for Justice and Respect (CJR).

What: Better Pride – Our Pride 2010

Background:
On Tuesday March 16, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. the Coalition for Justice and Respect (CJR) and the Foundation for the Coalition for Justice and Respect (FCJR) will hold a Community Meeting in discuss improving the experience of African-American Same Gender Loving Black Gays and Lesbians during Pride week 2010.
This meeting titled Better Pride – Our Pride 2010 will include Community Activist, Advocates, Promoters, Volunteers and Members of the African-American Black Gay and Lesbian Community will focus on how to improve on the promotion of events, the quality of programming and community safety and collaborative efforts that will further build our communities not just for one day or one week, but for the whole year.
We will put plans in place that will engage in the social and civic needs and the interest to provide information and fun. The participants for the planning of this year’s pride will include organizations and service providers of youth services, women services and faith based organizations in the Black Gay and Lesbian communities here in Chicago.

This will be the first of a series of community based planning meetings.

What: Joint Study African-American Men’s Assessment of Social Support Networks

Background:
Beginning March 15, 2010 the Coalition for Justice and Respect (CJR) will join with the University of Chicago Hospital’s Division of the Biological Sciences and conduct a scientific based research study to assess the risk factors of HIV amongst African-American Same Gender Loving Black Gay Men and their social networks.
The study will use the village concept to review social networks and the role they have in the prevalence of HIV in the African-American Same Gender Loving (SGL) Black Gay Male communities. The study known as the Men’s Assessment of Social Support & Risk Networks (MASRN) will include HIV testing and referral, investigation of social network group and their risk factors, and resource information sharing for the community and participants. The goal is to assess the behavior of 200 Participants that will take part in the study and other support activities. The results will better determine barriers to care treatment and prevention of HIV in the high risk population of African-American Black Men. The Participants of the program will be given a stipend to participate and to recruit others to participate. The Participants will include people in care and those that may not know their HIV status. The Study will include the participants will take a survey that will be conducted by CJR staff in collaboration with University of Chicago Division of the Biological Sciences.
“The work beyond the study will be to construct a clear path to information, prevention and care of HIV amongst the primary population.” Says Dr. John Schneider Assistant Professor, Medicine and Epidemiology University of Chicago Hospital and HIV Primary Care Physician at Access Health Clinic.

The study and interviews will be taking place at the offices of CJR at 1525 East 55th Street, Suite 312, Chicago, IL. Participants will also be invited to other programming and support opportunities.
